This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
