During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
