Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio
The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.
He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
